Some common questions regarding Microdermabrasion (also known as a ‘Crystal Peel’) include:

Microdermabrasion (also known as a 'Crystal Peel')

What is it?

Microdermabrasion, or crystal peel, is an effectively a deep exfoliating procedure in a clinical setting.  This is an effective treatment at giving a fresh radiant glow to your skin.

How does it work?

Fine aluminium crystals are blown at the skin then vacuumed away removing the uppermost layers of the skin and excess oil.

This works to shed old tired cells and unclogs pores making it a very effective treatment for acne and scars. It also improves tone and texture of skin by prompting new skin and collagen turnover.

Having the microdermabrasion does not cause any pain or discomfort.

Repeat treatments of medical microdermabrasion can be helpful in treating acne and may enhance the effectiveness of other treatments for fine lines, superficial scars and melasma (pigmented facial areas).

What conditions is it used for?

Although a simple procedure in itself, the microdermabrasion can be used effectively for a number of conditions.

  • Acnes (works by unclogging pores and removing excess oils)
  • Sun damage skin
  • Stretch Marks
  • Age spots
  • Milia
  • Fine lines (forces increased collagen turnover)
  • Areas of pigmentation (blasts away upper layers of old skin cells)
  • Acne scars (prompts new skin renewal)
  • Normal skin (can be used as an adjunct to normal skincare routine to refresh skin improve tone and give a clearer complexion)

Removing the very superficial layer of the skin (the stratum corneum) allows the skin to renew afresh leaving you with fresh healthier looking skin. The procedure of microdermabrasion  may also help the penetration of prescribed treatment creams such as Vitamin A creams.

How is it done?

The microderabrasion treatment takes approximately 15 minutes, is pain free and feels like a deep exfoliation. It is performed using a hand held device which “blasts” the crystsals in the treatment areas.

Follow-ups?

Although this procedure can be used as a one off prior to a special event, most individuals report that a course of microdermabrasion has more benefit than a single treatment.

Where skin conditions like acne, pigmentation and scarring are evident; courses of treatment are recommended to remove the imperfections. Individuals usually report that the skin feels smoother and fresher after the treatment.

As the upper layer of skin is exfoliated during the treatment, it is important to wear effective sunscreen.
